FCPS offers many different camps for the summer.  Learn more.

2. Adapted Recreation and Summer Camps

Summer Fun for All! Summer Camps and Adapted Recreation 

The Family Resource Center has recently published a list with dozens of summer camps including general camps, camps for students with a variety of needs, and camps for children of military personnel. They’ve also prepared a list of adapted resources, sorted by activity, that are inclusive for children and adults of various physical abilities. 

The Family Resource Center (FRC) provides resources and support for all families and school staff. They offer a free library, confidential consultations, and informational webinars. For more information, call 703-204-3941, email @email or visit their website.

The following lists are stories at approximate reading levels.  Please check over the books for content, appropriateness, and interest before selecting them for your children.

This list includes a wide variety of books to appeal to the interests and reading levels of many students. Parents are encouraged to review book selections with their children in order to help them make appropriate choices. Students may select books from this list, or they may read a comparable book that is approved by their parents.

Freedman, Russell. ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND FREDERICK DOUGLASS. (Nonfiction) Freedman tells the story of a friendship between two men who shared many characteristics. Lincoln and Douglass were both self-educated, born into poverty, and through relentless effort and hard work, reached great success.

Freedman, Russell. FREEDOM WALKERS. (Nonfiction) The author breathes life into the key personalities and events that contributed to the yearlong civil rights struggle. The struggle became known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Freedman, Russell. THE BOSTON TEA PARTY. (Nonfiction) More than any other event, the Boston Tea Party of 1773 has come to stand for the determination of American colonists to control their own destinies. From the arrival of the ships full of tea in Boston Harbor, through the protest meetings at the Old South Church, to the act of dumping 226 chests of tea into the harbor, Freedman captures this exciting story.

Hale, Shannon. PRINCESS ACADEMY: PALACE OF STONE. Hopkinson, Deborah. ANNIE AND HELEN. (Biography) This book describes the relationship between Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, and includes excerpts from letters written by Annie about her work with Helen.

Hopkinson, Deborah. TITANIC: VOICES FROM DISASTER. (Nonfiction) Photographs, telegrams, letters, and first-person accounts from passengers, witnesses, and crew members provide multiple perspectives on the sinking of the Titanic.

Klise, Kate. DYING TO MEET YOU: 43 OLD CEMETERY ROAD. (Fiction) In this story told mostly through letters, children's book author, I.B. Grumply, gets more than he bargained for when he rents a quiet place to write for the summer.

Korman, Gordon. SCHOOLED. (Fiction) Capricorn Cap Anderson has been homeschooled by his hippie grandmother, Rain. When Rain is injured in a fall, Cap is forced to attend the local middle school. Although he knows a lot about Zen Buddhism, nothing has prepared him for public school.

Korman, Gordon. UNGIFTED. (Fiction) After pulling a major prank in school and due to an administrative mix-up, troublemaker Donovan Curtis is sent to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction.

Lakin, Patricia. STEVE JOBS: THINKING DIFFERENTLY. (Biography) Everyone knows that Steve Jobs was an entrepreneur and a visionary. This book discusses Jobs’ triumphs, but it also lets us see his human side. Readers are reminded that people who dare to dream can change the world.

Lawlor, Laurie. RACHEL CARSON AND HER BOOK THAT CHANGED THE WORLD. (Nonfiction) Rachel Carson was an ordinary child who grew up to be a pioneer environmentalist. This biography shows that anyone can make a difference. A detailed epilogue explains more about the lasting impact of her book, Silent Spring.

Lord, Cynthia. TOUCH BLUE. (Fiction) The state of Maine plans to shut down her island's schoolhouse, which would force her family to move to the mainland--and Tess to leave the only home she has ever known. Fortunately, the islanders have a plan too: increase the numbers of students by having several families take in foster children. So now Tess and her family are taking a chance on Aaron, who has been bounced from home to home.

Summer Public Library Reading Adventure: JUNE 16-AUGUST 18, 2023

The Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) summer reading program (All Together Now) will start on June 16 and end on August 18. 

Students will have the chance to earn prizes when they read and complete activities.

Prizes will be awarded after the completion of Summer Reading Adventure.

Mental Wellness Summer Supports - All Parents and Secondary Students

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
     
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

 

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services for High School Students

Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.” 

 

Caregivers must first opt in their students to access Hazel Health. Then, a caregiver or school counselor, social worker, or psychologist can refer the student to Hazel for services. Learn more on the FCPS teletherapy webpage

 

  • Spanish:

Bienestar Mental Apoyos de Verano

La Oficina de Servicios de Intervención y Prevención de FCPS ofrecerá Consultas de Bienestar Mental virtuales del 26 de Junio al 4 de Agosto. Cualquier padre de FCPS o estudiante de secundaria puede programar una consulta de 45 minutos con un psicólogo escolar o trabajador social escolar por teléfono o videoconferencia. Technology Summer Support Hours

Summer Hours:

Beginning on Monday, June 13, we are moving the service to our in-house Service Desk. The phone number for parents will stay the same -  833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) - and the reduced hours for summer are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday in June, July, and early August. Outside of those hours, parents can also visit the Parent and Student IT Support Portal to find self-help resources or submit a tech support request ticket.

Summer Meal Kits Information

Families must apply and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2023-24 school year. 

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes. 

SUMMER MEALS  

Since Aldrin is a summer programming site, FCPS (and VDOE) will also offer the Summer 2023 Meal Program here.  The program will begin on July 10 and conclude on July 28.

  • We will host children 18 years and younger to free meals (breakfast and lunch). No ID is required.
  • Tables will be set up in the school cafeteria for community members to eat. In accordance with VDOE requirements, meals must be eaten onsite and meal participants must go through the cafeteria after signing in.
  • Summer 2023 Meal Program participants are asked to enter at Door #1.
  • Breakfast will be served from 9:00 to 10:00 am.
  • Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

July 10 - July 28 - More Information Locations and Times

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation and neither do we!  The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will host the Summer 2023 Summer Meal Service at schools throughout FCPS.  Check out the school sites below.

Fairfax County Public Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program.  Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, or age. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.  Meals will be served in the school cafeteria, with a few exceptions, meals will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, at the sites and times as follows.  All sites are closed on July 3rd and July 4th.

FNS will offer no-cost breakfast and lunch to all children 18 years of age and younger.  There is no registration involved and everyone is welcome! Meals must be consumed on-site.
