Attendance Reporting

Full-day Absence, Late Arrival, or Early Checkout

Attendance Reporting

Beginning in the 24-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can submit full-day absences using ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE.

All-Day Absences:

  • The Attendance feature in ParentVUE is the FCPS secure web solution for reporting all-day absences.
  • ParentVUE

Partial Absence: To report late arrivals, early dismissals, or to update already submitted attendance, please use one of the following options below:

Reporting an Absence:

  • When reporting a student's absence, please be specific about why your student will not attend school today.
  • If reporting an ill student, include symptoms, especially if they have a fever, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, and/or cough. If your student has a diagnosis from a healthcare provider, please include that information.

Messages of Absences:

  • Before 9 a.m. During after-school hours, a 24-hour answering machine will record your message.
  • If the school does not receive a call from the parent, the absence will be considered unverified.

Excused Absence

Illness of the student, death in the family, doctor’s or dentist’s appointments, and observance of a religious holiday.

Dental and Medical

We ask that appointments be kept to a minimum during the instructional day. If a child must leave early for a medical or dental appointment, parents need to contact the school at @email or call 703-904-3818 in advance and must sign the child out in the office at the appropriate time.

Prearranged Absence

If parents are aware of a future absence, they may contact the school to report the absence and the related date. Extended absences, typically for hardship reasons, must be documented and submitted to the school at least three to five school days in advance for review and action.

Unexcused Absence

Family trips, childcare situations, non-school-related activities, or missed school bus.

Any child who is absent from school for 15 consecutive days or more must be withdrawn from our enrollment.  Upon the child’s return, the parent must again officially enroll them.

Absences for family and student vacations are unexcused. Students are responsible for completing any missed assignments. Teachers will provide the student and parent or guardian with missed work but are not obligated to provide assignments prior to family or student vacations.

Virginia State Law

Virginia State law requires that each student who is absent from school must be reported each time by a responsible person. An excused absence is one for which parents/guardians have prior knowledge, consent, and a legitimate reason. Legitimate reasons include illness of the student, death in the family, and observance of a religious holiday. Absences for family and student vacations are unexcused. After the fifth unexcused absence, the school is required to refer the student to an Attendance Officer  - School Board Regulation 2234.

Late Arrival and Early Checkout

Late Arrival Procedure

If your child will be arriving late to school, please contact the school at @email or call 703-904-3818 .

Students arriving at school late are tardy and must report to the Main Office for correction of attendance records. Car riders arriving tardy should be accompanied to the Main Office by a parent/guardian. The back door is locked at 9:20 a.m. The bell rings at 9:20 a.m. and teachers begin their instructional day. If the student continues to be tardy a meeting with the principal, counselor, student, and parent will be held to discuss the situation.

Early Checkout Procedure

If a child must leave early, the parent/guardian should contact the school at @email or call 703-904-3818 .  The parent/guardian must sign the child out in the office at the appropriate time.  To protect instructional time, students can not be called to the office until a parent/guardian arrives at school to pick them up. Please allow sufficient time for your child to get to the office and for you to arrive on time for your scheduled appointment.

We will not release any child to an adult other than the parent/guardian or person listed on the emergency care form without the parent's permission.  Students may be released to either parent unless prohibited by a court order. If restricted custody has been legally established, a parent must provide a copy of the custody order to the school office and Registrar.
